Understanding Your Scores:

The ISEE uses a stanine scoring system, which ranges from 1 to 9. A score of 5 is average, with most students (about 56%) scoring in the 4–6 range. Only the top 10% of test-takers receive an 8 or 9, and the lowest 10% receive a 1 or 2. Keep in mind that these scores reflect a comparison to other students applying to independent schools, not the general population.

This report reflects the results of a practice exam, designed to help us better tailor your child’s preparation. Stanine scores can vary from test to test, especially early on, due to factors like test-day energy, confidence, and familiarity with the material. This is normal.

It’s also important to note that we use a conservative scoring curve on our diagnostics— slightly tougher than the official one—so these scores may be up to one point lower than what your student could score on test day.

Verbal Reasoning

This section tests your vocabulary and ability to understand how words are used in and out of context. It is divided into two parts: the first includes only Synonym questions, and the second includes only Sentence Completion questions. Strong language skills and word knowledge are key here.

Quantitative Reasoning

This section measures your logical thinking and problem-solving abilities rather than straightforward math knowledge. It includes two main types of questions: Word Problems and Quantitative Comparisons.

Reading Comprehension

This section tests your ability to understand, analyze, and interpret passages. You’ll answer questions about both the main idea and specific details, as well as vocabulary in context, inferences, and tone. Reading carefully and paying attention to what’s actually stated vs. what’s
implied is essential.

Mathematical Achievement

Unlike Quantitative Reasoning, this section focuses more on computational knowledge and skills. Questions will cover a range of topics including arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and data analysis.

Essay

The Essay is not scored, but it is sent to the schools to which you’re applying. It gives them a sample of your writing and your ability to express ideas clearly. Since this was a practice test, your essay will not be shared with any schools—but it’s great preparation for the real thing!
