Online vs. Paper ISEE: What’s the Best Fit for Your Student?

The ISEE Format Decision: Why It Matters

When signing up for the ISEE, one of the first decisions families face is how their student will take the test: on paper or online. While both versions assess the same content, the format can impact how a student performs, and how they prepare.

At Mulholland Prep, we’ve helped students navigate the ISEE for over a decade through proctored tests, targeted tutoring, and full-length practice exams. Now, with the rise of digital testing across the board—from the SAT to the ACT—we’re thrilled to introduce PEAK, our new Online ISEE Testing Platform, built to mirror the official online test experience in every way.

How to Decide: Online or Paper?

Every student is different, but here are a few things to consider:

✅ Your student might prefer Online if:

  • They’re comfortable navigating digital tools
  • They’ve been taking the ERBs online in recent years
  • They type faster than they write (especially for the essay)
  • They prefer working on a screen to flipping pages

Our online ISEE platform simulates this format exactly so students walk into the real test feeling at home.

✏️ Your student might prefer Paper if:

  • They focus better without screens
  • They like underlining and marking up text
  • They’re used to working on paper from school assignments
  • They have accommodations better suited to paper testing

We continue to offer paper-based practice tests and proctoring to support students choosing this route.

Why This Choice Matters

Familiarity can boost confidence. Whether your student is gearing up for a group test day or sitting for an online exam at home, practicing in the same format they’ll face on test day makes a big difference.

It’s also worth remembering that digital testing is becoming the norm. With the SAT now fully online and the ACT moving that way too, many students benefit from early exposure to digital tools, pacing, and stamina in this environment.

Our Advice

Talk to your student. Try both formats if you’re unsure. And above all, make sure your student has a chance to practice the way they’ll test.

With PEAK, Mulholland Prep’s online ISEE test platform, your student can now take full-length, timed, auto-scored tests with all the tools of the real thing. It’s smart prep, made smarter.
