The ISEE (Independent School Entrance Exam) can feel like a big hurdle—but knowing what to expect can make all the difference, especially when it comes to math. The ISEE includes two math sections: Quantitative Reasoning and Mathematics Achievement. While they sound similar, they test different skills.
—
Quantitative Reasoning
– focuses on how students think mathematically. Expect word problems, number logic, and comparisons. This section is less about computation and more about problem-solving and reasoning. For example, students will need to determine which of two variable quantities is greater or solve a word problem involving averages or ratios.
Example Question:
Directions: Compare the quantities in Column A and Column B. Choose:
- A if the quantity in Column A is greater
- B if the quantity in Column B is greater
- C if the two quantities are equal
- D if the relationship cannot be determined from the information given
x = 4
Column A
The value of 3x² + 5x + 9
Column B
The value of 2x² + 2x + 5
—
Mathematics Achievement
– on the other hand, is more traditional. Students will see straightforward math questions that assess their knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and data analysis. This section is more about applying learned skills and formulas.
Example Question:
A rectangle has a length of 10 cm and a width that is half the length. What is the area of the rectangle?
A) 25 cm²
B) 30 cm²
C) 40 cm²
D) 50 cm²

Key tips for preparing:
- Practice interpreting word problems carefully.
- Review grade-level math topics—but don’t get discouraged if the problems feel advanced.
- Focus on pacing and test-taking strategies. Students don’t need to get everything right to score well.
