How do I start my college search?

So, it’s time to start the search. Maybe you’re excited. Maybe you’re overwhelmed. Maybe you’re still hoping to ignore the whole thing.

However you feel, it’s ok. Just start with Step 1.

–

Step 1: Filter it down.

There are so many colleges out there. Seriously. There are just under 4,000 secondary degree-granting institutions in the U.S. alone! So, here, at the beginning, the key is to narrow down the choices based on what you really want.

Remember, it’s not where you go; it’s who you are. At this stage, consider downplaying prestige and focus instead on factors like:

  • Location
  • Size
  • Majors offered
  • Campus culture (this matters!)

–

Step 2: Load up on info.

Gather information from reliable sources to make informed decisions. Besides college websites, our go-to online resources are:

  • College Confidential
  • Niche
  • College Xpress (great for scholarships too)

While you are doing your research, you may consider checking tuition fees, scholarships, and financial aid options for each college. We know sticker shock. We do. However, don’t dismiss pricey private schools too quickly. There’s a lot of moving parts that may make those schools more affordable.

–

Step 3: Take a Virtual Tour

We are big fans of virtual tours. You can really get the feel for a campus from the comfort of your own couch. Spend 10 minutes on YouTube or CampusReel for behind-the-scenes footage from students. They show you what a brochure sure won’t!

–

Remember, the college search is about finding the right fit for you. Take your time, explore your options, and get excited!

You’ve got this,
