As the school year wraps up and 5th graders complete their ERB prep, it’s a great time to start thinking about the next step: preparing for the ISEE! The ERB provides a strong foundation for ISEE prep, especially if your student has been working with a Mulholland Prep tutor, as there is significant overlap in material and question type. However, the ISEE is a more intensive test that plays a significant role in Middle School admissions. The ISEE also provides an excellent foundation, as it can prepare students well for those big standardized tests in their not-to-distant future, the SAT and ACT.
What’s Different About the ISEE?
The ISEE is more challenging than the ERBs, requiring advanced pacing strategies, critical thinking skills, and a broader vocabulary. At Mulholland Prep, we offer a comprehensive ISEE prep program, including a 400+ page workbook and expertly trained tutors who tailor sessions to each student’s specific strengths and needs.
First Steps: What Should You Do Now?
- Take a Diagnostic Test – The best way to kick off ISEE prep is by taking a diagnostic test. This helps identify strengths and areas for growth. To request an ISEE diagnostic, simply email us and we will get you set up!
- Start Practicing Vocabulary – If your student has been preparing for the ERB, they already have a head start on vocab, but expanding their word knowledge further will be essential. For an advance look at the extensive vocab list included in our ISEE workbook, feel free to reach out to us via email or ask your tutor.
- Match with a Tutor – Our experienced tutors personalize prep plans to help students build confidence and master ISEE content. To find the right tutor, email us and we’ll connect you with an expert. If you’re already working with a Mulholland Prep tutor, they’ll be able to help you make a seamless transition to ISEE prep, introducing your student to the test format as well as the ISEE specific prep materials.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Should we start prepping in the summer? Yes! Summer is an ideal time to get ahead without the pressures of schoolwork. One session a week is a great starting point, or two if your schedule allows.
- When do we need to sign up for ISEE test dates? Registration opens August 1st each year. Check out Our Guide to ISEE Registration: Testing Options.
- Does my student have to take the ISEE? It depends on the middle schools you’re applying to. Some are test-optional, but we recommend taking the test and assessing the scores to determine if they strengthen your student’s application.
- Will my student have to take the ERBs again? Some schools require 6th graders to take the CTP-5 (aka the ERBs) again in the fall, providing another opportunity to showcase growth in the material.
