If you’re navigating the middle school admissions process, you’ve likely heard of the ERB (Educational Records Bureau) tests. But just how important are these scores when it comes to getting into your school of choice?
The answer depends on the school.
Schools That Don’t Require the ISEE
For schools that do not require the ISEE (Independent School Entrance Exam), the ERB takes on a more central role. These schools often use ERB scores as a key academic benchmark to assess student readiness and placement. Strong ERB results can demonstrate a student’s capabilities and help reinforce their application.
Schools That Require the ISEE
For schools that do require the ISEE, the ERB serves more as an “insurance policy.” While ISEE scores take priority in admissions decisions, ERB results can still be used to provide additional context—especially if there is a significant discrepancy between school grades and ISEE performance. A solid ERB score may also help with placement in specific programs or courses once a student is admitted.
What Should You Do?
- Check your target school’s policies. Some schools weigh ERB scores more heavily than others.
- Treat the ERB as an opportunity. Even if the test isn’t the most important factor, strong scores can only help.
- Consider preparation. While ERBs are often administered in school, a little extra review—especially in reading comprehension and math—can boost confidence and performance.
Middle school admissions can feel overwhelming, but understanding the role of the ERB can help you focus your efforts where they matter most. If you’re unsure how to prepare, Mulholland Prep is here to help.
