Opening College Decisions: What to Expect & Your Next Steps

After months of anticipation, college decisions are arriving. Whether you’re opening an acceptance, a waitlist offer, or a rejection, it’s important to remember: this is a milestone, not the final destination. No matter the outcome, you have next steps to take—and plenty of opportunities ahead.
If You’re Accepted (Yay!)
First, celebrate! This is a huge accomplishment, and you should take a moment to appreciate how far you’ve come. Once the excitement settles, here’s what to do next:
- Review your acceptance details carefully – Deadlines for enrollment deposits, housing, and financial aid are coming up, so make sure you know what’s required.
- Compare financial aid and scholarship offers – If cost is a factor in your decision, look closely at aid packages before committing. Some schools may allow you to appeal for additional aid.
- Attend admitted student events – If you’re still deciding between schools, these events can help you get a feel for the campus culture.
- Confirm your final choice by May 1st – This is the National Decision Day deadline for most colleges. If you were accepted via Early Decision (ED), be sure to withdraw applications from other schools.
If You’re Waitlisted
A waitlist offer means the college considers you a strong candidate but doesn’t have space available at the moment. While this can feel frustrating, you still have options:
- Accept your spot (if you’re still interested) – Follow the college’s instructions to officially remain on the waitlist.
- Send a short Letter of Continued Interest (LOCI) – Reaffirm your enthusiasm for the school and highlight any new achievements since applying.
- Secure a spot at another college – Since waitlist movement isn’t guaranteed, commit to an accepted school by May 1st. If you’re later admitted off the waitlist and choose to switch, you may lose your original deposit.
- Be realistic about waitlist odds – Some schools admit very few students from their waitlist, while others see more movement. Check historical data or talk to your counselor to set expectations.
If You’re Denied
Rejection is tough, but it does not define your future success. If you find yourself in this position:
- Refocus on your existing acceptances – There’s no one “perfect” school, and you may find that another option is a great fit.
- Consider alternative pathways – Gap years, transfer options, or schools with rolling admissions are all possibilities.
- Keep moving forward – Colleges evaluate your whole application, but admissions decisions are not a measure of your worth or potential.
If You Were Deferred from an Early Round
If you applied Early Action (EA) or Early Decision (ED) and were deferred to Regular Decision, you should:
- Send a Letter of Continued Interest (LOCI) to reaffirm your enthusiasm and highlight new achievements.
- Keep your grades strong – Midyear reports may be requested.
- Finalize your Regular Decision applications – Continue applying to a balanced list of schools.
Making Your Final Decision
By early April, most Regular Decision results will be in. As you decide where to enroll, consider:
- Academic Fit – Does the school offer the programs and opportunities you’re looking for? Are you excited about what they offer?
- Financial Considerations – Compare financial aid packages, and don’t hesitate to reach out to schools about scholarships or aid appeals.
- Campus & Community – Can you see yourself thriving there for four years? Visiting (in-person or virtually) can help.
